The purpose of the present study was to establish the effects of dentifrices containing zinc citrate (ZCT) on plaque growth. Plaque growth data were obtained from 50 participants in 4 groups with graded concentrations of ZCT (0, 0.5, 1, 5%) for 2 weeks.
The results were as follows:
1. Dentifrices which contained 0.5-5% ZCT had inhibitory effects on plaque growth (p 0.01).
2. In the 0.5% ZCT group, there were cumulative effect in long term use.
3. There was no significant difference in inhibitory effect on plaque between I% and 5% ZCT dentifrices.
4. It is desirable to popularize-0.5-1% ZCT containing dentifrices.
